ARTIST’S STATEMENT
I construct things:
• With love to use uncommon characteristics of materials, to figure out how to connect them, to play with tensions between fragile and rough or between sharp lines and undefined shapes.
• With love to de-symbolize objects, to examen what is behind human behavior like group dynamics and desire or what defines uselessness. Actually, an intuitive deconstruction of how and why we add values to our perception, feelings, thoughts and decisions.
With these interests in the back of my mind a thing is constructed that strives to challenge our understanding. Or to raise doubts beyond alienation.
ACTIVITY PLAN DURING THE RESIDENCY PERIOD
My activity plan is to execute following project at Gyeonggi:
The wonderment about value attribution
A proposal for a project about the translation of symbolic values
Objects, constructions and machines that have symbolic values fascinate me. Examples are equestrian statues, triumphal arches, defenses, barricades and industrial machines.
Also toys and musical instruments that recall a certain atmosphere trigger my interest.
I am mostly interested in the origin of symbolic values like reverence, power, desire and hope. What I wonder is if these values are intended by the makers or do we attribute these values? And do we perceive the same symbolism? What type of emotions do they evoke?
Is it caused by collective memory (shared memories by a group of people)?
Questions I ask myself and for which I don’t expect or even want an unanimous answer. But I would like to find out which values are attributed – by me and by others. And what happens with those values when you change characteristics of such an object.
Work process
in Gyeonggi I will search for locally known objects, constructions, landmarks and machines. I try to investigate what the different symbolic values are. What are the emotions and thoughts that are evoked? What are the tensions? What are the visual and material characteristics? And because Korea has such a different culture then Europe this process could take quite a different form.
The “discovered” values, tensions and characteristics are “translated” in other values, tensions and characteristics. And then they are again translated and translated. This repeating process of translating is a method for me to get as far away from the first associations and the collective memory.
The process of repeating translations takes place at the same moment when I start making prototypes of the constructions that emerge to me. The first prototypes resemble the chosen object. After more translations the prototype-construction gets it’s final shape – sometimes close, sometimes far away from the chosen object.
When the prototyping is done materials are sought or made for the final construction. And even then there will be changes (“kill your darlings” often takes place). The chosen materials also have symbolic values. And I love to ‘invent’ methods to connect the different materials, to create a kind of tension and often the constructions have a fragile and rough appearance.
And then I am very curious how the construction will be experienced. Especially if that is at a specific site. Besides that I would like to present my work process and steps I took in a side-exhibition and/or presentation.
