ARTIST’S STATEMENT
My main focus of my work is on identity, the construction of it and the violence behind or upon it. This interest comes from my personal background. I was born in Germany to Korean parents and have mainly lived in Germany, but also in Korea, the U.S. and the U.K. Living in Western countries as an Asian woman has showed me how stereotypes and prejudices of a certain race, e.g. Yellow Face or Asian Prostitute, reproduce not only a hierarchy between ethnicities, but also result in violent encounters such as rape. I addressed in my work ‘[Sorry that I always forget to press delete]’ this problematic, while reconstructing a memory of mine through scientific and subjective tools such as crime scene investigation and body memory.
I am also interested in visible and invisible things, reality and fiction. This was shown in [moo:] which was a guided museum tour mixed with both fiction and reality. It dealt with disappearing landmarks or public spaces, because of corporations constructing more office buildings.
My work in general takes an interest in socio-political issues. However, it shows them not in a direct and uncomfortable way, but rather is presented with humor and through that achieves subversion in it. Currently, I am interested in the nomadic life and the working conditions of emerging artists and how it affects themselves.
